Attendee Engagement: Chat, Polls, CTAs, Overlays, Q&A, and Resources

Answering the question: What are options for encouraging attendee engagement on a Sequel event.

Updated this week

There are an abundance of options to engage with and delight your audience during a live or simulive event.

Chat

Attendees can enter conversation using the Chat portion of the Chat+ module. Each event has two chats, the Event Chat and the Stage Chat.

  • Event Chat is visible to attendees and is where most of the conversation happens.

  • Stage Chat is only visible to Hosts and Presenters. This is a good place to pass messages after your event is live.

From chat options, you can "send to Q&A" to send the chat to the Q&A areas so it can be viewed, upvoted, answered, etc.

Would you like to disable the Event Chat from an event? Learn how here.

Live Chat Reactions

All users can react to messages in the chat by clicking the ellipsis next to the message and choosing a reaction.

Pinning Messages

Hosts are also able to pin important messages. Pinned messages appear at the top of the chat for all users. To pin a message select the ellipsis next to the message and click "Pin to top".

Stage Overlays

Hosts can bring even more attention to chat messages by adding them as overlays to share on the Virtual Stage. This is a great way to highlight audience insights or make announcements more visible.

To add a message as an overlay, select the ellipsis next to the message and click "Add in overlays". In the Overlays tab for the event, the message will now appear as a Text Overlay. Toggle "Show" to share the message with your audience.

Text, graphic, and ticker overlays make it easy to ensure your audience is alert and aware of what's important in your live event.

Ticker Overlay

A moving "news" ticker across the bottom of your screen is a great way to accentuate a point your speakers just made or act as a soft call-to-action

  1. From the backstage, go to the "overlays" tab.

  2. Click on "Add a new text overlay" to open options.

  3. For tickers specifically, select the right tab:

  4. Once added, the option to toggle ON and show on stage is visible.
This will be on stage until turned off by a host.

You can also add a poll as CTA overlay on stage to vote on but more on that below in the CTA section!

Q&A

The Q&A feature will allow your attendees to ask questions publicly or privately to the Presenters and Hosts on stage. Event organizers can collect questions within their Q&A tab before and during a live event. We offer a variety of advanced Q&A settings including Anonymous Q&A and Moderated Q&A.

Submitting Questions

When Q&A is enabled any user can submit a question by clicking on the Q&A tab for the event, adding their question in the "ask your question" section, and submitting it.

Answering Questions

When a question is answered by the Presenters during the event you can click the 3 dots next to the question and select "Mark as Answered".

For questions that can be easily answered in text form, such as "Is this webinar being recorded?", you can select "Answer by text" and add the answer. This way all the attendees can see the answer in the Q&A tab.

To help flow of communication, Sequel will show a typing indicator when a presenter or host is answering a question.

Anonymous Q&A

When Anonymous Q&A is enabled attendees can choose to submit their questions anonymously. Questions will show "Anonymous User" as the submitter.

Moderated Q&A

When Moderated Q&A is enabled questions will appear as Pending. When a question is Pending it is only visible to Hosts. Hosts can then Approve, Reject, or Delete the question. Once a question is approved you can interact with it like other questions.

If a host or presenter enters a question, it will be automatically "approved" and show to the audience as soon as submitted.

Add to Overlay

Hosts can share questions on the Virtual Stage just like chat messages. To add a question as an overlay, select the 3 dots next to the message and click "Add in overlays". In the Overlays tab for the event, the question will now appear as a Text Overlay. Toggle "Show" to share the question with your audience.

Polls

Uses Polls to collect audience feedback during the event. Polls can be published immediately or saved ahead of time. Hosts can create Polls on the Polls tab by following these steps:

  1. Select "Create new poll"

  2. Add a poll question

  3. Add poll options

  4. Choose advanced settings

    1. Decide if results should display when the poll is launched or when the Host closes the poll later.

    2. Percentage of votes is shown by default. Toggle this option to show the number of votes instead.

  5. Publish poll or Save for later

Once the poll is published attendees will see it in the Polls tab and the chat.

Attendees can choose one option and vote. Cose the poll to release results or just un-publish it to keep it private for post-event outreach.

Quiz Polls

Create a Quiz type poll to set a specific answer as the "right" one.

  1. Select "Create new poll"

  2. Click on the "Quiz Poll" heading

  3. Add question and answer options

  4. Set an answer as "correct answer"

  5. Configure advanced settings as applicable:

    1. Decide if results should display when the poll is launched or when the Host closes the poll later.

    2. Percentage of votes is shown by default. Toggle this option to show the number of votes instead.

  6. Publish poll or Save for later

Polls on Stage

To publish polls on stage, click on the three dots next to any published poll.

Select "Show on Stage" and you poll is now even more interactive. As people vote, the audience will be able to see the numbers change in real-time.

To remove the poll from the stage, simply click the X that appears when hovering over the stage. You can also unpublish from stage through the 3-dots area used earlier. Your view settings will determine how and where your poll appears on stage.

CTAs: Call to Actions

You'll find call to actions in the "CTAs" section of the backstage.

Engagement with CTAs is laid on top of the video so it's not interruptive. This can be left on for on-demand as well to continue to augment engagement.

CTAs can be created in "Sets" so you can choose the set dropdown for each event easily.

CTAs can also be positioned on various placements on your event:

Poll pop-up

Build as poll as normal and either "Save for later" or Publish to show right away in the Polls tab. You can also push quiz polls as a poll popup!

Quick overview video

To show polls on stage, you can use the "Show on Stage" option, which does NOT allow for voting right on the poll itself.

To show polls as a pop-up that'll accept votes right on the video landscape in which is appears, you can add the poll to Poll Popups from the 3 dots option or from the CTAs tab and applying the desired poll from the list.

Note: CTAs including poll popups are NOT recorded on the webinar recording and therefore, won't be part of your replay either.

From the CTA tab, you can "turn on" the poll CTA for attendees to engage with.

When on stage, this is what it'll look like until voted on:

When attendees are done voting on a poll, they get a friendly message and an option to view results.

Real-Time Engagement Settings

Enable/disable Chat+ tools in the Settings tab for the event in the Virtual Stage or Admin Dashboard.

You can adjust these ahead of time in the "Themes & Features" tab within the event's settings in the Sequel admin dashboard if that's more suitable for your workflow.

Are you interested in disabling any of our core Chat+ features for your event? You can do so within our Advanced Customization Suite! To learn more about customization, check out this article.
